To all our loyal readers,
Happy New Year!
We look forward to your continued support this year.
We will continue to strive to deliver great music this year.
With only a few ZINEs left in stock,
this time I'd like to talk a little about "East Side Story," which also appears in the ZINE.
Excerpt from "Talking About Lowrider Soul" below:
Before going to L.A., I used to think, "If it's not rare, it's not sweet,"
but there were songs I should have known even before that, and the classics shifted.
It was like starting over with East Side Story.
Since the 1990s, the "East Side Story" compilation CDs have become known to soul fans worldwide.
The sweet, poignant, and somewhat melancholic selection of songs
possesses a charm that goes beyond a mere collection of sweet soul.
At the time (1960s-1970s), much of that music wasn't mainstream, I think.
For example, records from local labels or small presses, hits limited to local radio or parties, and so on.
Then in the 90s, "East Side Story" carefully unearthed buried masterpieces such as
Thee Midniters
Sunny & The Sunliners
Brenton Wood
Little Willie G
The Jaguars.....
"East Side Story" systematized the songs that had been passed down as "classics" within Chicano/lowrider culture into a CD format.
It was an entity that spread the soul aesthetic rooted in the Chicano community to the world.
When you go there, you can feel firsthand that these "classics" are still being passed down, integrated into daily life, and are about to be handed down to the next generation.
