Thank you for waiting, I might have kept you waiting too long (©️ Toru Muranishi)
I'm writing a blog for the first time in a long time
First, watch this video
This is George Serrano, one of the leading young artists (or maybe now a mid-career artist?!) around LA who runs Barrio Sounds, a sound and label, by himself.
This video was shot in October this year when Andrew from Noriega Records and his father Mike invited us to a BBQ party at their home during the pandemic.
As the sun began to set, friends from the neighborhood gathered one after another with their record boxes, eating and drinking, spinning records, singing, discussing this and that, etc...
For them, this is everyday life.
Playing and listening to 7-inch records (this is the key point) is not a special act.
I realized that the fact that everyone knows and can hum Lowrider Soul and Rare Soul is a result of the accumulation of such daily life for Chicanos.
As NiNa also wrote in a zine, there's a lot you can only understand by going there.
I work hard to go every year to experience the current reality firsthand.
The video below is Serrano's performance when I first saw him four years ago.
Everyone gets excited about the rare deep soul "Dynamite Singletary / I Really Love You."
By the way,
Jorge Serrano releases rare soul reissues on vinyl from his own label, Barrio Sounds Records, and is also active as a selector.
