When did I start to realize the charm of those treasure-like songs hidden (literally) on the back of 60's Jamaican 7-inch records that I had collected because I wanted to listen to "SKA"? There were songs filled with sweetness and mellowness, themes like the sorrow of life, the pain of loving someone, or the pure wonderfulness of loving someone, all in stark contrast to the endlessly upbeat worldview of "SKA". Daddy-Kan's mix "Jamaican Souldies vol.1," released at the beginning of this year (2021), was what made me realize that by simply changing one's perspective, a new world can be seen, especially in the world of Jamaican oldies. The previous work, which meticulously unearthed Jamaican soul, R&B, and ballads and was composed of consistently strong selections, garnered a great response from various quarters. And now, "Jamaican Souldies vol.2" is released! Listening intently, sometimes with a start of surprise. Daddy-Kan's mixes are always full of new musical discoveries and excitement.
