『それは、ただの痔だと思っていた』   今年の4月の初めだった。 最初に異変に気づいたのは、自分ではなかった。 「便器に血みたいなのが付いてるよ」 Ninaにそう言われて、それから自分の便を確認するようになった。 いつもはウォッシュレットを使っているので、あまり自分で便を確認することはなかった。 流してしまう前に見てみると、便の表面にオレンジ色のゼラチン質のものが付着していた。 今度はウォッシュレットをする前に紙で拭いて確認してみる。 それは完全に血だった。 「まあ、痔だろう」 実際、以前から痔瘻があった。 でも、もう4年くらい症状は出ていなかった。 「久しぶりに痔が出血したのかな」 そう考える一方で、 「もしかして大腸癌？」 という考えも一瞬、頭をよぎった。 でも、 「痔であってほしい。きっとそうに違いない」 そんな希望的観測を持っていた。 Ninaと相談して、すぐに検査を受けようということになった。 駅前にある、最先端のシステムを備えた、開業して間もない内視鏡検査専門のクリニックに行くことにした。 ネットで予約を取り、週明けに血液検査、そして週末の土曜日に内視鏡検査を受けることになった。 「きっと痔だろう」 そう思いたかった。 でも、土曜日が近づくにつれて、少しずつ不安になってくる。 自分にとっても、Ninaにとっても、その一週間はとても長かった。 そして土曜日。 内視鏡検査そのものも嫌だったけれど、その前に待っていた絶食と大量の下剤も、当然ながら歓迎できるものではなかった。 便に不純物が混じらなくなるまで、2リットルの下剤をゆっくり飲み続ける。...
